No Other Gods: Confronting Our Modern-Day Idols is a distinctly relational study for women.
Author Kelly Minter invites women to become part of her group, where friends share time, dinner, music, recipes, musings, and most of all, their lives. In this eight-session Bible study, she encourages women to make room for God by dethroning the functional gods that clutter and claim their lives.
No Other Gods, the first release in the Living Room Series, is best suited for home study, or can be hosted at a church.
The Living Room Series began in...well, a living room. The series was born out of a desire for intimacy among friends in a leisurely atmosphere, aiming at in-depth Bible study without compromising honest discussion. So the five of us girls, Carrie, Anadara, Lauri, Alli, and I, gathered for black beans, avocados, salsa, chips, brown rice and a decadent dessert of sorts (recipe on the menu page). We talked about identity, image, marriage, singleness, faith, media influence, loneliness.
We discovered we all had a longing to study Scripture in a setting that wasn’t forced or uncomfortable; in a place where we could do normal things like eat, laugh, put our feet up, pray, converse. We longed for a warm environment to enrich our souls without losing the integrity of the spiritual. Not perfect, just real. No pretenses.
We discovered that dining, conversing, and studying together within the comforts of our homes felt natural. The setting - and all its offerings (coffee, candles, iTunes, deep couches) - primed our hearts and senses for God, His Scripture, each other. We were mostly good about doing the five-day-a-week “homework” - we still haven’t settled on a suitable replacement word here - prompting deep and enlightening discussion. Occasionally one, or all of us would have busy weeks, and we’d show up with little work done. The living room seemed to have more grace for these times than conventional settings (I credit the cookies).
No Other Gods is the first installment of The Living Room Series. The study seeks to help us confront our modern day idols in order to make room for Jesus Christ - the only One worth our worship. We hope you’ll journey with us by sharing your photos of your own living room friends, posting recipes, skimming the nogblog, keeping in touch via the message board, letting us know what you’re mining from Scripture, checking out the music recommendations, and more...be as involved as you wish.
